10 Years

This month marks the 10th anniversary of this site! (Copyright-free cake pictured left)

The motivation of the website came from the early 2010's frustration with repeating the same answers to the same arguments and questions. It was a simple and easy reference, and has surpassed my expectations in success.

Though, my life has largely moved on from counter-apologetics and the atheist/theist debate. I see it as a settled issue, with more important, and more advanced topics in life to address. This became direly apparent during the Trump administration.

It's like the distinction between "Global warming" and "climate change". They're two separate topics, and global warming is settled science. So, now we're talking about the consequences of it - climate change. The atheism/theism debate of civilization has waned in relevance in my perspective, with the question of the consequences of religion in society being front and center.

I'm apparently not alone.

Google Trends chart for atheism over about 17 years.

This chart is from Google Trends, for how often the term "atheism" is searched. One of the goals of atheist activists wasn't to squash the theistic opposition, as is (was) popular belief, but to normalize atheism. Starting around 2010, I think we started seeing that happening. People lost interest, as atheism wasn't the shocking boogey man anymore.

At least, that's my interpretation of the zig-zaggy line, and of the U.S. culture in general.

That's not to say atheism versus theism is irrelevant in itself. Religionists are raging harder than every, from COVID-19 denialism to hostile takeovers of Government. It very much is relevant.

But do I really have to debunk Pascal's Wager just one more time. Will that really help the world? August 13th marks the 1-year since the death of Ed Brayton, who I looked up to, to a fair degree. I was always annoyed at his dismissal of counter-apologetics as being unimportant. But he's right. Atheism is only the beginning of the journey, not the end.

Here's some low resolution Brayton to enjoy:

There's no intention to ever take this site down (but entropy will win in the end). It'll continue to be maintained, and maybe even a new post here and there. But as it is, I'm happy to let it stand under its own merit. There's still information here that'll be useful to someone.

Here's to the next 10 years.
